Chocobo Training

How to train Chocobo's and breed them to be able to climb mountains and walk on water

To begin the Chocobo side quest, you must travel to Choco Bill's Ranch near the Mythril mine. You should also have quite a bit of money saved up as raising Chocobo's isn't cheap. When you are ready to start, purchase your first Chocobo stable at the ranch. I recommend that you purchase at least three.

As you might have already seen, you can find Chocobo tracks while travelling the world map. That is where you can obtain your own Chocobo's. Each area with these tracks has a different quality of Chocobo as all of them are not the same. If you are interested in raising the best possible Chocobo's, you must find them at their best possible quality. Click here for a map.

Note: If you are interested in breeding special Chocobo's then you should start by capturing a male good Chocobo and a female great Chocobo.

To begin your quest for your first Chocobo, be sure to equip the "Chocobo lure" to one of your characters, purchase some greens from Choco Billy, and have some stables ready to receive them. When you find a Chocobo, a special type of music will play and you have the opportunity to capture a Chocobo. To capture the Chocobo, feed it greens while attacking the other enemies. Be careful not to hurt the Chocobo! If the Chocobo does not run away before you finish off the last of the enemies, the Chocobo is yours!

You can capture up to four Chocobo's at a time and afterwards you will have to return to the ranch and speak with Choco Billy about your finds. He will give you a short description about which type of Chocobo you have captured. Below is a chart explaining his evaluations.

CHOCOBO TYPE:

CHOCO BILLY'S EVALUATION:

Wonderful

"This... is a wonderful Chocobo!"

Great

"This is a great Chocobo."

Good

"Mmm, this seems like a good Chocobo."

Fair

"Mmm, this one's not bad."

Average

"This is a pretty average Chocobo."

Mediocre

"This Chocobo's so-so."

Poor

"This one doesn't seem to be very good."

Weak

"I really can't recommend this one."

Now that you hopefully got yourself a decent Chocobo or two, you are ready to start training them. Chocobo's love to eat greens which you can buy from Choco Billy and the Chocobo Sage. Each green raises a certain statistic of the Chocobo that can be found below.

STATISTIC:

EFFECT:

Speed

This will allow the Chocobo to run faster.

Intelligence

This will allow the Chocobo to better pace itself.

Stamina

This will allow the Chocobo to push itself harder for longer periods of time.

Attitude

This will allow the Chocobo to better behave.

While the expensive greens will boost more statistics they also cost much more Gil. You must be prepared to feed the Chocobo's as it will empty your wallet quickly. You can easily spend more than 500,000 Gil on greens while raising Chocobo's. The more expensive greens may also make Chocobo capturing a bit easier as well. The chart below gives details on each of the types of greens available to purchase.

If you feed a Chocobo a green and it fails to raise any of its ability points, then the statistics which that green boosts have been maxed out.
Attitude is determined by how you treat the Chocobo, feed it regularly then its attitude will be very good.
After you have maxed out all of your Chocobo's statistics, you should take them to the Gold Saucer to compete in their Chocobo races!

Chocobo Racing

Now you will probably have a set of some of some pretty good Chocobo's and want to show off your racing skills in the Gold Saucer. The Chocobo racing is not only fun, but it also raises the class of your Chocobo. Each Chocobo starts at the class "C" (lowest) and after racing them they can become class "A" (highest). If you race them at their hardest, you may eventually gain the rank of class "S" (special). After you have both a male and female "S" class Chocobo's, you have everything you need to create special breeds of the Chocobo. The chance of two "S" class Chocobo's creating a special Chocobo is much higher than that of two "C" class Chocobo's.

Special Chocobo's

Long ago, there were other types of Chocobo's roaming the planet. There was a mountain Chocobo which could travel over even the tallest mountains and a river Chocobo which could travel across shallow water. Today, they are extremely rare and can only be bred through advanced training. If you are interested in breeding your own special Chocobo's, continue reading!

Note: When you begin breeding, be sure to leave an empty stable for the newborn Chocobo!
