Chocobo Training

Final Fantasy VII - Chocobo Breeding

Chocobo's are creatures that have a function similar to Horses. They can be kept as pets, used for transportation and you can enter races.

After you have the Highwind, you can raise your own Chocobo's at Choco Bill's Ranch near Midgar. Raising them is not cheap; stables at the Ranch cost 10,000 Gil each and the Greens and Nuts can become quite expensive over time. It is also quite time consuming but can be quite rewarding.

There are 2 reasons to breed Chocobo's.
For either type of breeding, there are some things you need, see below.

There are 5 types of Chocobo that you can breed:
Preparation:

In order to breed Chocobo's you will need a few things:
  • Chocobo Stables - At the Chocobo Farm, you can rent stables for 10,000 Gil each with the maximum of 6 stables.
  • Greens - Greens are needed to keep Chocobo's in battle when trying to catch them and also have some benefits to stats.
  • Nuts - Used to breed Chocobo - Carob and Zeio Nuts are best.
  • Chocobo Lure Materia - Bought on Disc 1 or found Disc 2/3.
To catch a Chocobo, you will need to defeat the enemies that appear with it in battle but the Chocobo will run away if it feels threatened.

To the right are the Greens you can use in battle and the effects and below are the Chocobo types, where to find them and the enemies they will be with.

Chocobo Racing

FF7 Chocobo Racing

Chocobo racing is based on the stats of your Chocobo. In order to progress up the ranks you need to feed your Chocobo Greens to increase their stats. To the right is a list of the effects of the different greens.

You can feed a Chocobo a number of Greens at a time, but be careful as they will stop having an effect after a while and you may end up wasting a lot if you are not careful.

After your Chocobo can not be raised any more, head to Gold Saucer and go to the Chocobo Square.

Talk to Ester to start racing. Your Chocobo will start at Rank C and after winning 3 races you will go up a rank. The ranks are: C, B, A & S and they get harder as you progress, with the rival Chocobo's having higher Speed and Stamina stats with the S Rank being the hardest with Speed in the 150's and Stamina in the 500's. There is also a Black Chocobo that has Speed over 160 and Stamina over 1000 at S Rank!

Chocobo Breeding

FF7 Gold Chocobo heading to Knights of the Round

There are many reasons to breed Chocobo's but the main one is for Special Chocobo.

For each Special Chocobo, there are some requirements which will be detailed below.

The other main reason to breed Chocobo's is to get better stats for the races.

This section will focus on the Special Chocobo, how to get them and what they can do. To the right is a list of the Nuts that can be used to breed Chocobo but, to be honest, you don't need to buy any as the only ones that matter cannot be bought anyway (Except at Gold Saucer) and can be gained from enemies.

The Carob Nut is gained from an enemy called Vlakorados in the Icicle Area (On the grass, not the snow) and can be stolen from it. It does have a lot of HP so if you don't succeed first time, you can try a few times per battle.

The Zeio Nut is dropped or Stolen from Goblins. They can be found in the forest on Goblin Island, north-east of the Chocobo Ranch.
