Tips & Hints

Final Fantasy VII - Tips & Hints

Here are a few useful tips and hints to aid you in your adventure through the game.

The tips and hints here are all confirmed to be true but it is subjective how useful they will be during your playthrough. If you have any suggestions for this section or any tips you feel should be mentioned, please contact us via the Contact page.

Before adding any tips, they will be verified by me as there are a lot of tips online that are not true or have not been verified. I will also not mention any glitches such as item duplication as I do not want to be responsible for any adverse effects.

All Lucky 7's

FF7 All Lucky 7s!

This is a special battle condition that occurs when a character's HP lands on 7,777 HP.

The character's name will flash in the bottom bar and "All Lucky 7's" will appear at the top.

The character will attack the enemy; hitting it 64 times in succession with each hit dealing 7777 for a total of 497,728 damage. Following the automatic attacks, until the HP changes, attacks made manually will also be 7777 damage.

This can be engineered with clever uses of materia or patiently battling and healing to get the right HP.

This is very useful if you are fighting either of the two strong Weapons; Emerald or Ruby.

Item Farming

There are a number of items that are very useful but you find so few of and can't buy.

Here are some of my favourite ways to farm them:

X-Potion:

  • On Mideel island, there are enemies called Spiral. They come in pairs and you can steal an X-Potion from each with 51% chance.
  • In the Midgar area, the Custom Sweeper enemy can be Morphed into an X-Potion.
  • In Wutai area, the Bizarre Bug enemy drops X-Potions 100% of the time.
  • Upper Junon (Airport area) , the Roulette Cannon enemy drops X-Potion 100% of the time.

Turbo Ether:

  • In Shinra Mansion, in the safe room and the rooms adjacent, you can find enemies called Jersey. You can steal Turbo Ether from them with 51% chance.
  • In Sector 8 Underground are enemies called Shadow Maker, they drop Turbo Ether 100% of the time and are usually in a pair. While in Sector 8 it is worth grinding these as you can't get back here.
  • In the Gongaga, Corel and Gold Saucer areas is an enemy called Beachplug which you can Morph into a Turbo Ether.

Stat Boosters:
In the Sunken Gelnika Airplane are some enemies that can be morphed into various stat boosters:

  • Power Source - Enemy called "Unknown"
  • Guard Source - Enemy called "Unknown 2"
  • Magic Source - Enemy called "Unknown 3"
  • Mind Source - Enemy called "Serpent"
  • Speed Source - Enemy called "Poodler"
  • Luck Source - Enemy called "Bad Rap"

These enemies have between 6,000 and 15,000 HP so can be tough but at a higher level can be a good source of Stat boosters.

Elixir:

  • The grass areas of the Northern Continent have enemies called Vlakorados which can be morphed.
  • While trying to catch a Chocobo in the Gold Saucer area is an enemy called a Harpy, this can be morphed.
  • Norther Cave has enemies called Dark Dragons which drop them 14% (7/50)
  • Northern Crater has enemies called Master Tonberry, you can steal them 51% of the time. (They also drop Megalixir's 14% of the time)

Bone Village:

There are a number of items in Bone Village to excavate. Some of these can be items that may have been missed earlier in the game:

  1. Ether
  2. Ether & Turbo Ether
  3. Buntline (Once) & Phoenix Summon (If not received at Fort Condor)
  4. Mop (Once) & W-Item (If missed in Sector 8/Raid on Midgar)
  5. Megalixir (Once) & Bahamut ZERO (Once and only if player failed to save any Huge Materia)
  6. Potion
  7. Elixir & Key to Sector 5

Searching for Good Treasure will have the workers point towards:

  • Buntline/Phoenix Materia
  • Megalixir/Bahamut Zero Materia
  • Mop/W-Item

Searching for Normal Treasure will have the workers point towards:

  • Ether
  • Turbo Ether
  • Elixir
  • Potion

FF7 Tetra Elemental Morph

Tetra Elemental:

Cactus Island, located in the south-west of the world (Not shown on the in-game map but see the map section for location) is home to Cactuer; small, green cactus looking creatures.

Tip: Use L4 Suicide to reduce HP significantly then cast Stop (Cactuer have high evasion against physical attacks) to stop it dodging, then use Morph.

They can be morphed into Tetra Elemental. This accessory absorbs Fire, Ice, Lightning and Earth Elemental Magic making them very useful in battle.

FF7 AP Enemies

AP Grinding:

There is a great place to grind AP in the late-game where you can get a lot of AP to help grow your Materia quickly and, when combined with Cloud's Apocalypse or Cid's Scimitar which offer triple AP growth, you can easily max out your late-game Materia.

Inside the Northern Crater is an area that spawns a few enemies that give a lot of AP but there's a catch:

Name Description Location AP Provided Catch Additional Benefit
Mover Small orange balls Swamp-like room where Shield Materia is found (See walkthrough) 800 AP Each <5% Spawn rate. Hard to find Drops Turbo Ether
Magic Pot Little creatures in pots Northern Crater (Usually in the Swamp room) 1000 AP Each Invulnerable until given an Elixir (Not Megalixir) Drops Turbo Ether
You will need to grind Elixirs for the Magic Pot enemies but there are several enemies in the same area that you can steal Elixir's from, a small list of which can be found above.

FF7 Gold Saucer Prizes

EXP and Gil Boost:

In the Gold Saucer are a pair of Materia that you can buy with GP that increase the amount of EXP and Gil you receive per battle. These are useful if you want to boost a lower character up to level 99 or if you are broke and need cash.

The Materia cost 1,000GP for Gil Plus and 2,000GP for EXP. Plus and you can only buy one of each. To get more, level them up to Master to get another copy.

Status Manipulation:

A couple of status effects can be carried from battle to battle (unless removed with an item) and can be useful.
Name Positive Effect Negative Effect How to get it
Fury Increases the mount LIMIT bar is filled when damage is taken Causes attacks to miss more often Give a Hyper to character (When no other effect present)
Sadness Character receives less damage from attacks LIMIT bar fills slower* Give a Tranquilizer to character (When no other effect present)
* This can be useful with Tifa, whose Ultimate Weapon's power is based on her LIMIT bar, so keeping it high for longer (Without getting to the LIMIT) can be helpful.
